The sacred bloom

No flower is more spiritually significant in Thailand than the lotus (บัว, bua). Rising pure and beautiful from muddy water, the lotus is a central Buddhist symbol of enlightenment, purity and spiritual awakening — and it graces temple ponds, altars and offerings across the Kingdom.

Symbolism

• Purity from mud: the lotus grows from murky water yet opens immaculate above it — a perfect metaphor, in Buddhism, for rising above worldly suffering toward enlightenment;
• In offerings: lotus buds are among the most common flowers offered at temples and shrines — often held in the wai gesture of respect, or placed before Buddha images;
• Iconography: the Buddha is frequently depicted seated or standing on a lotus — the flower is woven through Thai religious art (more symbolism).

Lotus vs water lily

• True lotus (Nelumbo) holds its leaves and flowers above the water on tall stems, with distinctive round leaves and the famous seed pod;
• Water lilies (Nymphaea) float their leaves and flowers on the water surface — also common and beautiful in Thai ponds, and sometimes loosely called lotus;
• Both fill temple ponds and water gardens; Thailand grows many varieties in pink, white, red, blue and purple.

Lotus in daily life

• Cuisine: lotus is edible — lotus seeds appear in desserts and snacks, lotus stems and roots in cooking;
• Cut flowers: lotus buds are sold in markets, often with the outer petals folded back into an elegant shape for offering;
